Students play key role in Bath Rugby’s first win of Premiership season as former Team Bath captain Tom Doughty makes first top-flight start
University of Bath students Orlando Bailey (pictured) and Max Ojomoh played key roles as Bath Rugby recorded their first victory of the 2021-22 Premiership Rugby season on Sunday.
It was also a day to remember for former Team Bath BUCS Super Rugby captain Tom Doughty as he made his first top-flight start in the 22-19 win against Worcester Warriors at The Rec.
Team Bath Dual Career student-athlete Ojomoh, who studies Business Administration, scored the home side’s second try of the first half, both of which were converted by fly-half Bailey, before Worcester hit back to lead 19-14 at the break.
A Tom De Glanville try meant the scores were locked at 19-19 with just 10 minutes remaining before International Development with Economics student Bailey – supported by a Matrix Sports Scholarship – help his nerve to slot over a decisive penalty kick.
“I obviously knew it was a big kick,” Bailey told Bath Rugby’s official website after the game. “I gave it my best and luckily it went through so I’m really happy.
“To have that moment where I tapped the ball, kicked it out and saw the fans go up in the air and to see what it means to everyone… and for us it’s huge relief and elation.”
