Storming second half sees Bath rally from 26-0 down to beat Cardiff and claim top-five finish in 2023-24 BUCS Super Rugby league table

Iwan Price-Thomas’s last-minute penalty completed a dramatic turnaround victory in Cardiff for the University of Bath men’s 1st XV in their last BUCS Super Rugby league match of the 2023-24 season.

An early yellow card set the tone for a disappointing first half for the Bath Building Society-sponsored visitors, who found themselves trailing 26-0 at the break.

It was a completely different story in the second half, though, as a brilliant try from Iwan Coyle and well-worked close-range effort from Eddie Erskine – both converted by Price-Thomas – swung the momentum in Bath’s favour.

A superb solo effort from Price-Thomas closed the gap to 26-19 and the full-back brought the scores level in the dying minutes when he converted a lineout drive from replacement hooker Max Pearce.

There was still time for Bath – who are also supported by Rengen – to earn a penalty in the closing seconds and Price-Thomas held his nerve to complete a 29-26 victory, which saw the men’s 1st XV move up to fifth in the final league table.

They will now travel to fourth-placed Durham in the quarter-finals of the BUCS Knockout Competition on Wednesday 27th March.
